📋 How to file a witness slip

A witness slip is a quick, formal way to tell your state legislators where you stand on a bill before it comes to a vote. Anyone can file one — you don't need to be a constituent of the sponsor or from the district.

  1. Click "Go to ILGA witness slip page" on any bill. If a hearing is scheduled, you'll see it on the ILGA page's Witness Slips tab.
  2. Click Create a Witness Slip and fill in the short form. Key fields:
    • Firm/Business: Self
    • Title: N/A
    • Representation: Self
    • Testimony: Record of Appearance Only
    • Position: Proponent (support) or Opponent (oppose) — check the card for each bill's recommended stance
  3. Submit. That's it — your position is now part of the official legislative record.

💡 Pro tip: Create a free MyILGA account first so your info is saved for future slips. See also: Strong Towns Chicago's guide.
